tehen

Surrounded by sunlit rice fields in the historic village, tehen is a 150-year-old farmhouse where guests can experience the slower rhythms of rural Kyoto.

Named after the Japanese radical “tehen,” associated with the hand and craftsmanship, the house was created as a place for seasonal living, gathering, and hands-on experiences rooted in everyday life.

A House Shaped by Many Hands

Originally believed to have belonged to a village headman, the farmhouse has been carefully restored using local timber and materials connected to the region.

Throughout the house, guests will find furniture and objects carrying local stories — from pieces inherited from a nearby closed school to furniture and small architectural works created by students from around the world who have collaborated with ROOTS over the years.

Rather than a polished luxury stay, tehen offers a space where traces of everyday rural life and human connection remain visible.

Spaces to Gather and Slow Down

The house features three guest rooms in addition to a spacious shared living area, accommodating up to 10 guests.

A large traditional earthen-floor doma serves as the heart of the house, complete with a wood-fired pizza oven where guests can enjoy making pizzas or baking bread together.

The farmhouse also includes three toilets, a modern bath, and a traditional Goemon-style bath heated by firewood.

The spacious sauna, accommodating up to six people at once, offers a quiet and immersive way to unwind after a day spent in the forests and villages of Keihoku.
